What Are Dental Pits and Fissures?

Back teeth have little grooves and pits like mountain valleys on the biting surface. We call these Dental Pits and Dental Fissures. They are part of the normal anatomy / structure of a natural tooth.

While fissures and pits are naturally formed on back teeth, different people have different types of pits and fissures formed. Some of these teeth may naturally tend to trap food and bacteria in the deep pits and fissures.

For people who tend to be more prone to decay, these natural dental pits and fissures can be a source of bacteria and acids that cause decay.

What Are Dental Pit and Fissure Sealants?

Dental Pit and Fissure Sealants are a dental treatment intended to help prevent tooth decay by resurfacing and sealing off deep, food and plaque-retentive features on the biting surfaces of the teeth, to establish a smooth and easily cleansable surface on the tooth.

How are Dental Fissure Sealants Placed?

To place a dental fissure sealant on your tooth, we would first clean up the deep dental fissures by gentle trimming or air abrasion. This procedure is normally painless.

We then apply a gel to roughen the tooth surface and complete the placement of the fissure sealant with a liquid tooth-colored sealant material.

Finally, the sealant is smoothened and we check to see if you can bite normally.

Are There any Problems or Side Effects of having Fissure Sealants?

Yes, there can be potential problems in the long-term with doing fissure sealants.

If fissure sealants are not placed and sealed well, they can chip or leak over time. This may result in decay happening under the sealant which may go unnoticed until it is more serious.

Here at B & F Dental, we understand the need to carefully do a well-sealed Dental Fissure Sealant that will last you for a long time without issues.

Of course, regular dental checkups every 6 months and dental x-rays at regular intervals are good to help detect problems early.

Who Should have Dental Sealants Done?

Dental sealants can be done on the permanent teeth of children at higher risk of decay, usually from age 6 onwards when the permanent first molars have started erupting. They can also be done on adults of any age.

How Long Does The Procedure Take?

The procedure of placing a dental fissure sealant on a single tooth may take around ten to twenty minutes at most.

Summary

Dental Pit and Fissure Sealants, when done well, are an excellent, minimally invasive and painless method of protecting teeth that are at high risk of decay due to their anatomical structure. However, they do require regular follow-up and can give problems if performed badly or without a high level of attention to detail.
